Repair
We can repair everything on your swamp cooler. Do you have a squeaky belt, or is the swamp cooler just not running? We can fix it all! We understand how swamp coolers function, making it easy to diagnose the problem and to come up with the right solutions.
Winterize
Here in Colorado we have cold and freezing winters. This means that it is not enough to simply turn your off your swamp cooler. You have to winterize it. This insures protection to your swamp cooler, so it does not break during the winter. When we winterize your swamp cooler, we will also do an inspection of all the parts and give you a status report on the condition of your swamp cooler.
Swamp Cooler Spring Startup
When spring comes around, it is time to get your swamp cooler or evaporative cooler started up and ready for the hot summer months to come. A swamp cooler utilizes cold water to cool down air and using a blower, pushes the air through your house. This is a very efficient and cheap way to cool down your house. Since this system runs on water, it is very important to winterize the system before the weather reaches freezing temperatures (can be as early as the end of September). Because we have freezing winters here in Colorado, all of the water needs to be drained out of the swamp cooler and any water lines. You can read more about winterizing your swamp cooler further down this page. Since the swamp cooler is turned off and not running through the winter, it will need to get started back up in the springtime. This is not quite a “turn key” solution. The swamp cooler has to be cleaned, the pads need to be changed, the drain plug has to be sealed, and the water needs to be turned on. After all of this, it is time to inspect the swamp cooler and make sure that the motor, water pump, and distribution tubes all work properly and are in good condition.
When Arvada Handyman does a swamp cooler startup, we always inspect the entire system. We will give you a status report on the condition of your swamp cooler and any potential upcoming work.
Swamp Cooler Repairs
There are many components on a swamp cooler that can go bad. If just one of the components does not work properly, the whole system will not be effective. This will cost you more money to run the swamp cooler, and it will not be cooling your house as well as it could be.
Common swamp cooler issues
The swamp cooler is blowing hot air. This is most likely caused by having no water in the system or the water pump may not be working. To repair this, we will often have to replace the water pump.
The fan is not running when turned on. This could be from a couple of different reasons. The most common one is from a ripped or worn out belt. The belt is connecting the fan to the motor, so if it is worn out or ripped, the motor will not spin the fan. Alternatively, it could also be the motor not working, and therefore, would need to be replaced.
Feels a bit cold, but not cold enough. This is normally caused by old or bad pads that are not absorbing the water. If the pads are not replaced every year, this is often what will happen.
My swamp cooler smells bad. Usually the reason for this is because your pads are getting old and moldy and need to be replaced. This can also happen if your swamp cooler needs to be cleaned.
Here at Arvada Handyman, we have all of the equipment to test all of the components of your swamp cooler. We also have the knowledge to be able to diagnose it correctly so that we can ensure your swamp cooler is running when we leave!
Swamp Cooler Winterize
Here in Arvada, it is very important to winterize your swamp cooler before it starts to reach freezing temperatures outside. A swamp cooler is filled up with water, and if it is not winterized before the temperature drops, the water might freeze up. When water freezes it expands, which can cause damage to the swamp cooler itself, the swamp cooler distribution, or the water lines that are connected to your swamp cooler.
When the time comes to winterize your swamp cooler, we recommend that you call a professional in, like Arvada Handyman, to do the winterizing. You want to make sure it is done correctly. This ensures that you will not have any problems with your swamp cooler the following year. When we winterize your swamp cooler, we make sure that all of the water is drained out of the water pipes, the swamp cooler, and the distribution. We also clean the inside of your swamp cooler and offer to apply a waterproofing coating inside of your swamp cooler. This will help keep your swamp cooler leak free and in good condition. At the end of the winterization process, we will do a full inspection of your system. This will allow you to know the condition of your swamp cooler and know if there are any maintenance or repairs needed in the future! We will also put a cover on your swamp cooler if you have one, otherwise, with an additional charge, we can get one for you.
When should you winterize your swamp cooler?
When the night temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and the day temperatures are in the low 70s, we recommend that you schedule a swamp cooler winterization. Here in Arvada, Colorado, this is normally around the end of September and through October. Around this time is when you should get your swamp cooler winterized.
If there are any freezing nights in the forecast, it is very important to get your winterizing done as fast as possible. If you are not able to get an appointment before it starts to freeze, we recommend setting your swamp cooler to “pump only” on those freezing nights. This will keep the water moving and that will slow the speed down of the water freezing.
